Valbelluna - left bank of the PiaveValbelluna - left bank of the Piave
Description

The left bank of the Piave area of the Valbelluna marks the border between the Pre-Alps and the Dolomites, and offers spectacular views of the peaks of both. This side of the valley, so dear to its famous son, the writer Dino Buzzati, is rich in highly-interesting cultural routes, and visitors will find a host of treasures of all kinds tucked away in little hamlets and villages steeped in history, where there are often museums and historical villas to explore and admire. This area of the Cheese Route boasts a large number of quality establishments: farms, malghe and dairies offer the chance to discover the most spectacular green areas of this side of the Valbelluna. You can visit Malga Garda in the municipality of Lentiai, then go up the road which leads to Colderù and from there on to Malga Montegal, in the delightful area of Valmorel in Limana, and, on your way back down to the bottom of the valley, La Schirata farm in Valpiana and Malga Col Toront on Col Visentin, overlooking the city of Belluno, where you will have the chance to taste genuine flavours and admire superb landscapes. A trip round the local dairies will give you the chance to admire the beautiful villages in the area, such as Lentiai (where you will find the dairy of the same name), Trichiana (Frontin dairy), S. Antonio di Tortal (dairy on the side of the “Strada dei Cento Giorni” road, so called because it was built in 100 days by the Austrian military during WWI) and Valmorel (one of the few surviving “rotational” dairies, where each member of the cooperative takes the products made with his own milk and sells them independently). Once you reach the bottom of the valley, you might like to pay a visit to a new company, Cargnel, in Cesa di Limana, which cures and sells a range of cheeses.
For those who wish to get to know the area through the delicious recipes served in the restaurants which form part of the Cheese Route, your journey of discovery begins in the municipality of Belluno, with the De Gusto Dolomiti restaurant in Sagrogna and Al Borgo in Anconetta, and continues up to the Olivier Hotel on Nevegal hill. Following the flow of the river, move on towards Limana, where you will find the L’Oasi trattoria; Trichiana, with the Casera Vecia agritourist farm at Pian de le Femene; Nave di Mel, with the El Mighelon bruschetteria, and finally Lentiai, where you can stop at the Col de Ru hostelry in Col De Ru, or the characteristic Bon Tajer agritourist farm just a little further on, nestling amid green fields with fine views over the bottom of the valley.
